Leadership
Local elections and leadership hustings
Congratulations to all our members standing up for our communities and succeeding in the local elections.
Taking the lead
As we begin 2025, I want to reflect on a key event from the end of 2024 that will inform how we approach the next 12 months.
First meeting of Leaders’ Council
The Government’s Leaders’ Council – bringing together local government leaders and ministers – met for the first time in October at the LGA’s annual conference in Harrogate.
Leadership changes at LGA
The LGA has a new chair – and only its second female chair – after Cllr Shaun Davies stood down having been elected MP for Telford in the general election.
New programme for local leaders launched
The LGA has launched a new programme for local leaders, exploring the various complex and demanding challenges they face – ranging from crisis management to political changes.
The chief executive’s evolving role
Whether you’re a council leader, portfolio holder, backbencher, or member of the opposition, you will know who the chief executive of your council is.
Embedding ethics in organisational culture
The Nolan principles of public life – honesty, integrity, objectivity, selflessness, openness, accountability and leadership – are the benchmark for ethical behaviour, underpinning codes of conduct across the public sector, including in local government.
Collective leadership in social care
Leadership is often seen as a hierarchy, but I want to move towards a collective approach.
